Dosage Information

Adult Dose

Bupivacaine 0.25% with epinephrine 1:200,000: 10-20 mL for nerve blocks; maximum dose: 2 mg/kg (not to exceed 175 mg total).

Pediatric Dose

Bupivacaine 0.25% with epinephrine 1:200,000: 0.5-1 mL/kg for nerve blocks; maximum dose: 2.5 mg/kg (not to exceed 175 mg total).

Side Effects

Common side effects include local irritation, transient numbness, dizziness, headache, hypotension, and palpitations.

Contraindications & Precautions

Hypersensitivity to bupivacaine, epinephrine, or other amide anesthetics; severe cardiovascular disease; uncontrolled hyperthyroidism; and in areas with infection or inflammation.

Important Warnings

Risk of systemic toxicity, especially with inadvertent intravascular injection; monitor for signs of CNS and cardiovascular toxicity; use caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, or hyperthyroidism.
