About Dexrazoxane

Uses & Indications

Dexrazoxane is used to reduce the risk of cardiomyopathy associated with certain chemotherapy agents, particularly anthracyclines, in patients with breast cancer. It is also indicated for the treatment of extravasation of anthracycline drugs.

Storage Requirements

Store at room temperature (20°C to 25°C or 68°F to 77°F). Protect from light and moisture. Once reconstituted, the solution should be used immediately or stored in a refrigerator for no more than 24 hours.

Dosage Information

Adult Dose

For the prevention of cardiomyopathy, the recommended dose is 10:1 ratio of dexrazoxane to doxorubicin (e.g., 1000 mg/m² IV on day 1, followed by 500 mg/m² IV on days 2 and 3). For extravasation, a single dose of 1000 mg/m² IV should be administered as soon as possible after the incident.

Pediatric Dose

The safety and efficacy of dexrazoxane in pediatric patients have not been established; therefore, it is not routinely recommended for this population.

Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, and injection site reactions. Less common but serious side effects may include myelosuppression and allergic reactions.

Contraindications & Precautions

Dexrazoxane is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its components. It should not be used in patients with severe renal impairment.

Important Warnings

Dexrazoxane should be used with caution in patients with a history of myelosuppression or those receiving other myelosuppressive agents. It may increase the risk of secondary malignancies. Monitor blood counts regularly during treatment.
