Dosage Information
Adult Dose
The standard adult dose for primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia is 48 mg to 145 mg once daily. For severe hypertriglyceridemia, the dose is 48 mg to 145 mg once daily, with the dose adjusted based on patient response and tolerance.
Pediatric Dose
Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established; therefore, fenofibrate is not typically recommended for use in children.
Side Effects
Common side effects include increased liver enzymes, respiratory disorder, abdominal pain, back pain, headache, and increased creatine phosphokinase.
Contraindications & Precautions
Fenofibrate is contraindicated in patients with severe renal dysfunction, active liver disease, gallbladder disease, nursing mothers, and known hypersensitivity to fenofibrate or any component of the product.
Important Warnings
Fenofibrate can cause liver function abnormalities, and periodic liver function tests are recommended. It may also increase the risk of gallstones and pancreatitis. Use with caution in patients with a history of liver disease. Discontinue if significant elevations in liver enzymes persist. Fenofibrate may enhance the effects of oral anticoagulants, requiring close monitoring of INR and prothrombin time.
