About Heparin Sodium

Use: | Heparin Sodium is used for the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic disorders, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and as an adjunct in the treatment of myocardial infarction and unstable angina. It is also used in the prevention of clotting in arterial and cardiac surgery and during hemodialysis.

Dosage Information
Adult Dose
For DVT prophylaxis: 5000 IU subcutaneously every 8 to 12 hours. For treatment of DVT/PE: Initial bolus of 80 IU/kg IV followed by a continuous infusion of 18 IU/kg/hour, adjusted based on aPTT.
Pediatric Dose
For DVT/PE treatment: Initial bolus of 75-100 IU/kg IV followed by a continuous infusion of 20-30 IU/kg/hour, adjusted based on aPTT.
Side Effects
Common side effects include bleeding, thrombocytopenia, injection site reactions, and elevated liver enzymes.
Contraindications & Precautions
Contraindicated in patients with active bleeding, severe thrombocytopenia, hypersensitivity to heparin, and in patients undergoing procedures with a high risk of bleeding.
Important Warnings
Monitor for signs of bleeding and thrombocytopenia. Use with caution in patients with renal impairment, liver disease, or those undergoing spinal or epidural anesthesia due to the risk of hematoma. Adjust dosing based on aPTT to prevent complications.
