Ketamine Hydrochloride is used for the induction and maintenance of anesthesia. It is also used for sedation, analgesia, and as an adjunct in pain management.

Dosage Information

Adult Dose

For induction of anesthesia, the typical dose is 1 to 4.5 mg/kg intravenously or 6.5 to 13 mg/kg intramuscularly. For maintenance of anesthesia, 0.1 to 0.5 mg/min intravenously is administered as needed.

Pediatric Dose

For induction of anesthesia in children, the dose is 1 to 2 mg/kg intravenously or 3 to 7 mg/kg intramuscularly. Maintenance dosing is similar to adults, adjusted for weight and clinical response.

Side Effects

Common side effects include hallucinations, vivid dreams, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.

Contraindications & Precautions

Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to ketamine or any of its components. Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, increased intracranial pressure, or a history of substance abuse.

Important Warnings

Ketamine can cause psychological disturbances, including hallucinations and confusion. It should be used with caution in patients with a history of psychiatric disorders. It may also cause respiratory depression, especially when used with other CNS depressants. Use in a controlled medical setting with appropriate monitoring.
