Use: | Magnesium Sulfate Heptahydrate is used for the treatment of hypomagnesemia, prevention and control of seizures in pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, and as a tocolytic agent to delay preterm labor.
Adult dose: | For hypomagnesemia: 1-2 g (8-16 mEq) IV over 15 minutes. For eclampsia: 4-5 g IV infusion initially, followed by 1-2 g/hour continuous infusion. Dosage may vary based on specific clinical conditions.
Pediatric dose: | For hypomagnesemia: 25-5

Dosage Information
Adult Dose
For hypomagnesemia: 1-2 g (8-16 mEq) IV over 15 minutes. For eclampsia: 4-5 g IV infusion initially, followed by 1-2 g/hour continuous infusion. Dosage may vary based on specific clinical conditions.
Pediatric Dose
For hypomagnesemia: 25-50 mg/kg/dose IV every 4-6 hours as needed, not to exceed 2 g per dose. Dosage should be adjusted based on clinical response and serum magnesium levels.
Side Effects
Common side effects include flushing, sweating, hypotension, drowsiness, and decreased reflexes. More severe side effects can include respiratory depression and cardiac arrest if overdosed.
Contraindications & Precautions
Contraindicated in patients with heart block, myocardial damage, or significant renal impairment. Caution is advised in patients with neuromuscular diseases.
Important Warnings
Monitor serum magnesium levels and renal function during treatment. Use with caution in patients with impaired renal function due to the risk of magnesium toxicity. Rapid administration may lead to hypotension or cardiac arrest.
