Uses & Indications

Omeprazole is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, erosive esophagitis, and peptic ulcer disease. It is also used for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori in combination with antibiotics.

Store at room temperature, between 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F), in a dry place away from light and moisture.

Dosage Information

Adult Dose

The standard adult dose for GERD is 20 mg once daily for 4 to 8 weeks. For maintenance of healing of erosive esophagitis, 20 mg once daily. For Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, the dose may start at 60 mg once daily and can be adjusted based on patient response.

Pediatric Dose

For children aged 1 to 16 years with GERD or erosive esophagitis, the dose is based on weight: 5 mg once daily for those weighing 5 to <10 kg, 10 mg once daily for those weighing 10 to <20 kg, and 20 mg once daily for those weighing ≥20 kg.

Side Effects

Common side effects include headache, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and flatulence.

Contraindications & Precautions

Omeprazole is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to omeprazole or any other components of the formulation. Caution is advised in patients with severe liver impairment.

Important Warnings

Long-term use of omeprazole may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency, hypomagnesemia, and an increased risk of bone fractures. It may also increase the risk of Clostridium difficile infection in the colon. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration appropriate to the condition being treated.
