About Syntocinon
Class: | Oxytocic agent (synthetic oxytocin)
Use: | Induction of labor, stimulation of labor, management of incomplete abortion, and control of postpartum hemorrhage.
Adult dose: | Induction or stimulation of labor: Initial dose of 0.5 to 1 milliunit/minute IV, gradually increased by 1 to 2 milliunits/minute every 30 to 60 minutes until desired contraction pattern is established. Postpartum hemorrhage: 10 IU by slow IV injection or 10 IU IM after delivery of the placenta.

Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, uterine hyperstimulation, hypotension, tachycardia, water intoxication, and hyponatremia.
Contraindications & Precautions
Significant cephalopelvic disproportion, unfavorable fetal positions, fetal distress when delivery is not imminent, hypertonic uterine contractions, hypersensitivity to oxytocin, and conditions where vaginal delivery is contraindicated.
Important Warnings
Continuous monitoring of uterine activity and fetal condition is necessary. Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disorders, renal impairment, or history of uterine surgery. Risk of uterine rupture, especially in multiparous women or those with previous uterine surgery.
