Dosage Information

Adult Dose

Not typically used in adults for the treatment of apnea of prematurity. Dosing for other indications should be determined by a healthcare provider.

Pediatric Dose

Initial loading dose of 20 mg/kg of caffeine citrate (equivalent to 10 mg/kg of caffeine base) intravenously, followed by a maintenance dose of 5 mg/kg of caffeine citrate (equivalent to 2.5 mg/kg of caffeine base) every 24 hours, either intravenously or orally.

Side Effects

Common side effects include feeding intolerance, irritability, restlessness, and increased heart rate. Less common side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances and jitteriness.

Contraindications & Precautions

Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to caffeine or any components of the formulation. Use with caution in patients with a history of seizures, cardiac arrhythmias, or peptic ulcers.
