Dosage Information
Adult Dose
The typical adult dose is 4 mg (10 ml) three times a day. The dosage may be adjusted based on the patient's response and tolerance, but should not exceed 0.5 mg/kg/day.
Pediatric Dose
For children aged 2 to 6 years, the usual dose is 2 mg (5 ml) two to three times a day, with a maximum of 12 mg/day. For children aged 7 to 14 years, the dose is 4 mg (10 ml) two to three times a day, with a maximum of 16 mg/day.
Side Effects
Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, and increased appetite.
Contraindications & Precautions
Cyproheptadine is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the drug, newborn or premature infants, nursing mothers, and in patients with angle-closure glaucoma, stenosing peptic ulcer, symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy, bladder neck obstruction, and pyloroduodenal obstruction.
Important Warnings
Use with caution in patients with a history of asthma, increased intraocular pressure, hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular disease, or hypertension. Avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants while taking this medication. May impair mental and/or physical abilities required for the performance of potentially hazardous tasks such as driving or operating machinery.
