About Pyrimethamine
Class: | Antiprotozoal agent, Folate antagonist
Use: | Treatment of toxoplasmosis and prevention of malaria in certain populations
Adult dose: | Initial dose: 200 mg orally once, followed by 25 mg daily for maintenance; for toxoplasmosis, 50 mg daily for 2-4 weeks, then 25 mg daily
Pediatric dose: | For toxoplasmosis: 1 mg/kg/day (up to 50 mg) for 2-4 weeks, then 1 mg/kg/day (up to 25 mg) for maintenance
Side effects: | Nausea, vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, ras
Important Warnings
Risk of severe skin reactions, blood dyscrasias, and folate deficiency; monitor blood counts regularly; use caution in patients with liver or kidney impairment
