Uses & Indications

Dobutamine Hydrochloride is used for inotropic support in the short-term treatment of adults with cardiac decompensation due to depressed contractility resulting from organic heart disease or cardiac surgical procedures.

Dosage Information

Adult Dose

The standard adult dosing is typically initiated at 2.5 to 10 mcg/kg/min, titrated to the desired response. The dose may be adjusted up to 40 mcg/kg/min based on patient response and tolerance.

Pediatric Dose

Pediatric dosing is not well established; however, doses of 1 to 20 mcg/kg/min have been used in clinical practice, titrated to the desired effect.

Side Effects

Common side effects include increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, premature ventricular contractions, angina, palpitations, and headache.

Contraindications & Precautions

Contraindicated in patients with idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis and in those with hypersensitivity to dobutamine or any component of the formulation. Use with caution in patients with atrial fibrillation or other arrhythmias.

Important Warnings

Dobutamine may increase heart rate and blood pressure significantly. Continuous monitoring of ECG and blood pressure is recommended during administration. Use with caution in patients with severe hypotension or hypovolemia.
