Uses & Indications

Glycopyrrolate is used to reduce salivation and excessive secretions in the respiratory tract, as well as to prevent bradycardia during anesthesia. It is also used in the treatment of peptic ulcers and as an adjunct in the management of certain types of nerve agent poisoning.

Dosage Information

Adult Dose

The typical adult dose for preoperative use is 0.2 mg administered intravenously or intramuscularly, usually given 30 to 60 minutes before surgery. For the treatment of peptic ulcers, the usual dose is 1 mg orally, taken twice daily.

Pediatric Dose

For children, the typical dose for preoperative use is 0.01 to 0.02 mg/kg, administered intravenously or intramuscularly, not exceeding 0.2 mg. For peptic ulcers, dosing should be determined by a healthcare provider based on the child's weight and condition.

Common side effects include dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, blurred vision, and increased heart rate.

Contraindications & Precautions

Glycopyrrolate is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the drug, myasthenia gravis, narrow-angle glaucoma, and obstructive uropathy.

Important Warnings

Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, renal impairment, or gastrointestinal obstruction. May cause heat prostration in hot weather due to decreased sweating.
