About Haloperidol
Class: | Antipsychotic (butyrophenone)
Use: | Treatment of schizophrenia, acute psychosis, and for the control of tics and vocal utterances of Tourette's disorder; also used for severe behavioral problems in children and as an adjunct in the treatment of nausea and vomiting.
Adult dose: | Initial: 0.5 to 5 mg orally 2 to 3 times daily; maintenance: 1 to 15 mg/day, adjusted based on clinical response.
Pediatric dose: | For children 3 years and older: Initial: 0.5 to 1 mg orally 2 to 3 times

Dosage Information
Adult Dose

Pediatric Dose

Side Effects
Common side effects include sedation, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, and extrapyramidal symptoms (e.g., akathisia, dystonia, tardive dyskinesia).
Contraindications & Precautions
Hypersensitivity to haloperidol or any component of the formulation; Parkinson's disease; severe CNS depression; comatose states; and in patients with a history of neuroleptic malignant syndrome.
Important Warnings
Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, hepatic impairment, or a history of seizures; may increase the risk of tardive dyskinesia and neuroleptic malignant syndrome; monitor for signs of depression or suicidal thoughts.
