About Magnesium Sulfate

Use: | Magnesium sulfate is used for the treatment of hypomagnesemia, prevention and control of seizures in pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, and as a tocolytic agent to delay preterm labor.
Adult dose: | For hypomagnesemia: 1-2 g IV over 15 minutes; for eclampsia: 4-5 g IV infusion initially, followed by 1-2 g/hour IV infusion; for tocolysis: 4-6 g IV loading dose, then 1-4 g/hour IV infusion.
Pediatric dose: | For hypomagnesemia: 25-

Dosage Information
Adult Dose
For hypomagnesemia: 1-2 g IV over 15 minutes; for eclampsia: 4-5 g IV infusion initially, followed by 1-2 g/hour IV infusion; for tocolysis: 4-6 g IV loading dose, then 1-4 g/hour IV infusion.
Pediatric Dose
For hypomagnesemia: 25-50 mg/kg/dose IV every 4-6 hours as needed, not to exceed 2 g per dose.
Side Effects
Common side effects include flushing, sweating, hypotension, drowsiness, and decreased reflexes.
Contraindications & Precautions
Contraindicated in patients with heart block, myocardial damage, or significant renal impairment. Use with caution in patients with myasthenia gravis.
Important Warnings
Monitor serum magnesium levels and renal function during treatment. Overdose can lead to serious toxicity, including respiratory depression, cardiac arrest, and coma. Use with caution in patients with renal insufficiency.
