Uses & Indications

Acetylcysteine is used to treat acetaminophen overdose, to reduce the viscosity of mucus in respiratory conditions, and as a mucolytic agent in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cystic fibrosis.

Dosage Information

Adult Dose

For acetaminophen overdose: 140 mg/kg orally as a loading dose, followed by 70 mg/kg every 4 hours for 17 doses. For mucolytic use: 600 mg orally once daily or divided into two doses.

Pediatric Dose

For acetaminophen overdose: 150 mg/kg orally as a loading dose, followed by 12.5 mg/kg every hour for 20 hours. For mucolytic use: 300 mg to 600 mg orally once daily, depending on age and weight.

Side Effects

Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), rash, and anaphylactoid reactions (rare).

Contraindications & Precautions

Hypersensitivity to acetylcysteine or any component of the formulation; caution in patients with asthma or a history of bronchospasm.

Important Warnings

Risk of severe allergic reactions; monitor for signs of anaphylaxis. Use with caution in patients with asthma or respiratory conditions.
