About Adenosine
Class: | Antiarrhythmic agent
Use: | Adenosine is used for the rapid conversion of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) to normal sinus rhythm. It is also used as a diagnostic aid in myocardial perfusion imaging.
Adult dose: | Initial dose: 6 mg administered as a rapid intravenous (IV) bolus over 1-2 seconds. If not effective within 1-2 minutes, a 12 mg dose may be given. A third dose of 12 mg may be administered if necessary.

Dosage Information
Adult Dose
Initial dose: 6 mg administered as a rapid intravenous (IV) bolus over 1-2 seconds. If not effective within 1-2 minutes, a 12 mg dose may be given. A third dose of 12 mg may be administered if necessary.
Pediatric Dose
Initial dose: 0.05-0.1 mg/kg as a rapid IV bolus. If not effective, doses may be increased by 0.05-0.1 mg/kg, not to exceed 0.3 mg/kg or a maximum single dose of 12 mg.

Common side effects include flushing, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, headache, dizziness, and nausea.
Contraindications & Precautions
Contraindicated in patients with second- or third-degree AV block (except in patients with a functioning artificial pacemaker), sick sinus syndrome (except in patients with a functioning artificial pacemaker), and known hypersensitivity to adenosine.
Important Warnings
Adenosine can cause significant hypotension, especially in patients with autonomic dysfunction. It may induce bronchoconstriction in patients with asthma. Use with caution in patients with a history of seizures or those with a prolonged QT interval.
