About Ephedrine Hydrochloride
Class: | Sympathomimetic amine
Use: | Treatment of bronchospasm in asthma and bronchitis, as a vasopressor in hypotensive states, and for the management of certain types of cardiac arrest
Adult dose: | 5 to 10 mg (0.5 to 1 mL of 1:1000 solution) IV or IM, may repeat every 5 to 10 minutes as needed; maximum total dose should not exceed 50 mg
Pediatric dose: | 0.1 to 0.5 mg/kg IV or IM, may repeat every 5 to 10 minutes as needed; maximum single dose is 10 mg
Side effects: | Increased heart

Contraindications & Precautions
Hypersensitivity to ephedrine or any component of the formulation, severe hypertension, tachyarrhythmias, hyperthyroidism, and during or within 14 days of MAOI therapy
Important Warnings
Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hyperthyroidism; monitor blood pressure and heart rate closely; potential for abuse and dependence; may cause significant CNS stimulation leading to seizures in sensitive individuals
