Uses & Indications

Acetylcysteine is used primarily as an antidote for acetaminophen (paracetamol) overdose and to reduce the viscosity of mucus in respiratory conditions.

Dosage Information

Adult Dose

For acetaminophen overdose: 140 mg/kg IV loading dose, followed by 70 mg/kg IV every 4 hours for a total of 17 doses. For mucolytic use: 600 mg to 1200 mg orally or IV daily, depending on the clinical scenario.

Pediatric Dose

For acetaminophen overdose: 150 mg/kg IV loading dose, followed by 12.5 mg/kg IV every hour for 20 hours. For mucolytic use: 10 mg/kg to 20 mg/kg IV or orally, up to 600 mg daily.

Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, rash, and anaphylactoid reactions.

Contraindications & Precautions

Hypersensitivity to acetylcysteine or any component of the formulation; caution in patients with asthma or bronchospasm.
