About Aciclovir (Acyclovir)
Class: | Antiviral agent
Use: | Treatment of herpes simplex virus infections (including genital herpes), varicella-zoster virus infections (chickenpox and shingles), and prevention of recurrent herpes simplex infections in immunocompromised patients.
Adult dose: | 200 mg orally every 4 hours for 5 days for initial genital herpes; 400 mg orally three times a day for 7-10 days for shingles; 800 mg orally every 4 hours for 5 days for varicella.
Pediatric dose: | 5 mg/kg (up to 250 mg) IV ever

Dosage Information
Adult Dose

Pediatric Dose
5 mg/kg (up to 250 mg) IV every 8 hours for severe infections; for oral use, 200 mg 5 times daily for 5 days for initial genital herpes in children over 2 years.
Side Effects
Nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, and skin rash.
Contraindications & Precautions
Hypersensitivity to aciclovir or valacyclovir; caution in renal impairment and dehydration.
Important Warnings
