Uses & Indications

Treatment of herpes simplex virus infections, including genital herpes and herpes simplex encephalitis; treatment of varicella-zoster virus infections (shingles); prophylaxis in immunocompromised patients.

Storage Requirements

Store the powder at room temperature, 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Reconstituted solution should be used within 12 hours and should not be refrigerated.

Dosage Information

Adult Dose

For herpes simplex infections: 5 mg/kg every 8 hours for 5-10 days. For herpes simplex encephalitis: 10 mg/kg every 8 hours for 10 days. For varicella-zoster infections: 10 mg/kg every 8 hours for 7 days.

Pediatric Dose

For children aged 3 months to 12 years: 250 mg/m² every 8 hours for herpes simplex infections; 500 mg/m² every 8 hours for varicella-zoster infections. For neonates: 10 mg/kg every 8 hours for 10 days.

Side Effects

Nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, rash, renal dysfunction, phlebitis at injection site.

Contraindications & Precautions

Hypersensitivity to aciclovir or valaciclovir; caution in patients with renal impairment or dehydration.

Important Warnings

Ensure adequate hydration to prevent renal toxicity; monitor renal function, especially in patients with pre-existing renal impairment; use with caution in elderly patients due to increased risk of renal side effects.
