Uses & Indications

Dosage Information

Adult Dose

200 mg orally every 4 hours, 5 times a day for 10 days for initial genital herpes; 400 mg orally three times a day for 7-10 days for shingles; 800 mg orally every 4 hours, 5 times a day for 5 days for chickenpox.

Pediatric Dose

For children 2 years and older, 20 mg/kg (up to 800 mg) orally 4 times a day for 5 days for initial herpes simplex; for varicella, 20 mg/kg (up to 800 mg) orally 4 times a day for 5 days.

Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, and fatigue. Rare but serious side effects may include renal toxicity, neurotoxicity (tremors, confusion), and hypersensitivity reactions.

Contraindications & Precautions

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to aciclovir or valacyclovir. Caution in patients with renal impairment or dehydration.
