Dosage Information

Adult Dose

800 mg orally every 4 hours (5 times daily) for 7-10 days for initial herpes simplex infections; for recurrent infections, 800 mg orally every 4 hours (5 times daily) for 5 days; for varicella, 800 mg orally 4 times daily for 7 days.

Pediatric Dose

For children over 2 years, 20 mg/kg (up to 800 mg) orally 4 times daily for 5 days for herpes simplex; for varicella, 20 mg/kg (up to 800 mg) orally 4 times daily for 5 days.

Side Effects

Nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, and skin rash. Rarely, nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity (tremors, confusion).

Contraindications & Precautions

Hypersensitivity to aciclovir or any component of the formulation; caution in patients with renal impairment.

Important Warnings

Ensure adequate hydration to prevent renal toxicity; monitor renal function in patients with pre-existing renal impairment; caution in patients with neurological disorders.
