Uses & Indications

Dosage Information

Adult Dose

400 mg orally every 8 hours for 5 days for initial episodes of genital herpes; for recurrent episodes, 400 mg orally every 8 hours for 5 days; for chronic suppressive therapy, 400 mg orally twice daily.

Pediatric Dose

For children aged 2 years and older, 400 mg orally every 8 hours for 5 days for initial episodes of genital herpes; for recurrent episodes, 400 mg orally every 8 hours for 5 days; for chronic suppressive therapy, 400 mg orally twice daily. Dosing for children under 2 years should be determined by a physician.

Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, and fatigue. Rare but serious side effects may include renal toxicity, neurotoxicity (tremors, confusion), and hypersensitivity reactions.

Contraindications & Precautions

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to aciclovir or valaciclovir. Caution is advised in patients with renal impairment or dehydration.
