About Oxytocin

Use: | Induction of labor, enhancement of uterine contractions during labor, management of postpartum hemorrhage, and facilitation of milk ejection during breastfeeding.
Adult dose: | 0.5 to 1 mU/min IV infusion, increased gradually every 30-60 minutes until desired contraction pattern is achieved; maximum dose typically does not exceed 20 mU/min.
Pediatric dose: | Not applicable; use in pediatric patients is not common and should be determined by a specialist.

Contraindications & Precautions
Fetal distress, abnormal fetal presentation, uterine hypertonicity, previous uterine surgery, and hypersensitivity to oxytocin.
Important Warnings
Monitor uterine activity and fetal heart rate continuously during administration; risk of uterine rupture in patients with a history of uterine surgery; use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease.
