Dosage Information

Adult Dose

4 mg initially, followed by 2 mg after each loose stool, not to exceed 8 mg per day (or as directed by a physician).

Pediatric Dose

Not recommended for children under 6 years; for children 6-8 years, 2 mg initially, followed by 1 mg after each loose stool, not to exceed 3 mg per day; for children 9-11 years, 2 mg initially, followed by 1 mg after each loose stool, not to exceed 4 mg per day.

Side Effects

Common side effects include constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea, and abdominal pain.

Contraindications & Precautions

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to loperamide, acute dysentery (bloody diarrhea), bacterial enterocolitis, pseudomembranous colitis, and in cases of abdominal pain without diarrhea.

Important Warnings

Use with caution in patients with liver disease; may cause drowsiness; avoid alcohol; not for use in cases of severe dehydration or in patients with a high fever.
