About Loperamide Hydrochloride
Class: | Antidiarrheal agent
Use: | Management of acute diarrhea, including traveler's diarrhea; chronic diarrhea associated with inflammatory bowel disease; and to reduce the volume of discharge from ileostomies.
Adult dose: | 4 mg initially, followed by 2 mg after each loose stool; maximum of 8 mg per day for acute diarrhea and 16 mg per day for chronic diarrhea.

Dosage Information

Contraindications & Precautions
Hypersensitivity to loperamide or any component of the formulation; bacterial enterocolitis; pseudomembranous colitis; diarrhea caused by antibiotic use; acute dysentery.
Important Warnings
Risk of serious cardiac events with high doses; may cause toxic megacolon in patients with inflammatory bowel disease; should not be used in cases of diarrhea caused by certain infections or in patients with severe liver disease.
