About Loperamide Hydrochloride
Class: | Antidiarrheal agent
Use: | Management of acute diarrhea, including non-specific diarrhea and diarrhea associated with inflammatory bowel disease; also used to reduce the volume of discharge from ileostomies.
Adult dose: | 4 mg initially, followed by 2 mg after each loose stool; maximum of 16 mg per day.
Pediatric dose: | For children aged 6 to 12 years, 2 mg initially, followed by 1 mg after each loose stool; maximum of 6 mg per day. Not recommended for children under 6 years.

Dosage Information

Contraindications & Precautions
Known hypersensitivity to loperamide or any component of the formulation; acute dysentery (bloody diarrhea and high fever); bacterial enterocolitis caused by invasive organisms; pseudomembranous colitis.
Important Warnings
Risk of severe abdominal distension; may cause toxic megacolon in patients with inflammatory bowel disease; not for use in cases of diarrhea caused by bacterial infections or antibiotic-associated colitis; should not be used in patients with a history of opioid addiction or abuse.
